Middle Child was already a favorite among Philadelphians for its inventive spin on American standards. After opening a second location with elevated dinner offerings, founder Matt Cahn was in search of a complementary identity update to match. My art director and I looked to decades-old menu covers, paper napkins, and matchbooks, channeling old-school charm infused with a sharp dose of new-school attitude. I was given the freedom to explore the letterforms in detail, eventually producing two hand-drawn custom typefaces. The beacon glow of the restaurant’s facade beneath the shadow of the subway tracks inspired one of my favorite illustrations to date.
